Inaugural Media Release - Hammerheads Attack
June 28, 2007 PBFC has been in existence for four months now. The players have come together and created six teams and to this date they have competed in two tournaments. The players that range from six to sixteen years old, have trained hard, three days a week in rain and extreme heat. The Hammerheads have done well in their competitions. Some of these players are playing in divisions that are an age older than they actually are. The first tournament was located in Miramar, Florida. This was the first time many of the players had ever competed against someone outside the Pompano area and against players they have never come across in schools or neighborhoods. The teams were placed in the recreational division and played as expected since many of the games were against competition teams. Travis Beljovec was the first player to score for a Hammerhead team. History was also made in that game when the U 14 boys, played the U 14 coed team. The tournament was a success. On June 9th and 10th, the teams traveled out of Broward County to Altamonte Springs. Once again, all six teams qualified for Nationals, but history was made again. The U 14 boys, U 16 girls and the U 16 boys finished 3rd, receiving medals for their competitive results. The U 14 boys fell short of a gold medal when they failed to beat a team from Coconut Creek. The boys dominated the entire game and hit the posts more than ten times, but failed to beat the team to advance to the gold medal match. In this tournament, the Hammerheads entered an over 30 team, consisting of coaches from the organization. The over 30 team was able to compete against the U 16 boys. The men beat the boys 4-3 in a close game. Special moments also occurred in that game when Coach Hightower and Assistant Coach Lynch were able to compete against their sons, something special and they will memorable for the rest of their lives. Why, very few times does a father get to compete against a child in any type of organized competition, especially soccer. These boys were also the youngest players in their division since prior to the competition, the U 16 boys age bracket was eliminated. They played against two over 30 teams, High School and open division teams. Next week the teams travel to Naples to compete in their last tournament before Nationals. Anticipation is beginning to grow with Nationals coming closer. The team is developing well and will grow with time. Until next time…………………………..stay out of the water. |
Highlights! All six teams qualified in the top four of their brackets which qualified them for the National Tournament, which will take place at Disney’s Wide World of Sports in the end of July. In June the teams traveled to Altamonte Springs. The U 14 boys, U 16 girls and the U 16 boys finished 3rd, receiving medals for their competitive results.
