Tenth Media Release - Hammerheads Attack

Pompano Beach Football Club (PBFC) U-18 Boys Repeats as World Champions!

January 15, 2010, Pompano Beach Football Club (PBFC) sent two teams to the 2009 Kick-it 3v3 World Championships at the Disney Wide World of Sports complex, in Orlando, Florida. The teams that qualified for this, invitation only tournament, were the 1993 and 1991 boys teams.

The 1991 boy’s team, Andrew Green, Kevin Waiante, Matthew Elder, Matthew Weingard, Travis Bejlovec and Kris Rosales, were seeded first in their division, as the defending Champions.  Pool play began with a 6-2 win against the Terminators from Middleburg, Florida. In the second game, the Hammerheads defeated an old rival, Celtic from Belle River, Canada 4-1. The third game was a rematch of last year’s final, Old Skool from Franklinville, NJ.  For the first time in several matches Old Skool defeated the Hammerheads 4-3 in the final match of the day.

On Sunday, in their 4th match, the 2-1 Hammerheads faced the Mafia, who were undefeated.  Who would be top of the bracket. The Mafia scored two goals within the first three minutes, but the Hammerheads continued coming forward. The score should have been tied after the Mafia defender stepped in the box while clearing the ball (a goal, in 3v3 competition) and Matthew Weingard’s goal just on the offensive side was disallowed. At the conclusion of the game the Hammerheads had suffered their second loss 5 -3.

In the semi-final match on Sunday, the Hammerheads faced off against Celtic. At the conclusion of regulation time, the game was tied. In extra time, Golden Goal, a Celtic defender attempted to clear a shot but accidently directed the ball into his own goal. The Hammerheads were set to repeat their Championship form.

On Monday, the final was set against the Mafia. The Mafia scored first at the 6 minute mark. In the second half, Matthew Elder, crossed midfield and chipped the ball into the back upper 90 of the goal, tying the score. With approximately 3 minutes left, Kevin Waiante received after received a chipped ball from Matthew Elder, faked the player to the left, stepped right and fired the ball into the net. The Hammerheads continued to press for the next three minutes, not allowing the Mafia to attack. The final whistle blew and the repeat was complete, Hammerheads 2 Mafia 1.

This team retired at the conclusion of the World Championships, since players in this age group move to open brackets or will leave PBFC for college and furtherance of their soccer careers.
