On November 23, 2008, Challenge Sports brought their 3v3 tournaments to Broward County. With the assistance of Broward Sheriff’s Office PAL, Red Bull, Octaserve Technologies, Papa John’s Pizza and PBFC, the tournament was a great success. Approximately 60 teams registered and played on a sunny cool day at the new Central Broward Regional County Park, located in Lauderhill.
Due to the limited amount of teams, there were only several divisions. PBFC once again entered 7 teams. For the first time, PBFC entered an under 12 all girls teams. This team competed against competitive teams and did very well. K. Stafford. K. Bejlovec, M. Fehl, S. Stone and E. Elder, finished strong competing against girls that have played together for a long time and are in the competitive division.
The under 13 boys, R. Selmeci, D. Silvani, A, Torruellas, S. Harrold, S. Horn, and C. Queiroja, also competed against competitive teams and won their first game in this tournament since their inception. All players are commended for their perseverance and dedication to play.
The two under 16 boy’s teams once again competed in the final match against each other. Again, Elder’s team was able to outlast Bentley’s team by a two goal margin. This tournament was an important one for these two teams as this is the first tournament where they competed against all teams older than they are. Games included the under 18 teams, open teams and over 30. Elder’s team: M. Elder, M. Keleher, J. Martin, T. Bejlovec, K. Rosales and A. Sheets, were once again undefeated. Beating an over 30 team, and under 18 women’s team and tying the PBFC under 18 boys were quality games. Bentley’s team: F. Bentley, J. Meehan, M. Weingard, B. Sanchez, D. Fehl and B. McCann all played great games. They defeated the under 18 women’s team, tied the PBFC over 30 team, but lost to the PBFC open team. They also played exceptionally well, playing against more skilled and talented players.
The under 18 boys and the open teams played in the final match. The open team had 3 players for the tournament; T. Jacobs, R. Micsak and B. Williams, all very talented players. They handled all competitors with ease, winning the bracket by defeating the under 18 boys 6 to 2. The under 18 boys had one of their better tournaments. Players included: A. Green, R. Hightower, G. Trent, G. Padilla and L. Kaufman. This team tied an over 30 team, defeated an open team and tied the PBFC over 30 team.
The over 30 men competed in a difficult bracket, playing against players as young as 15. M. Hightower, B. Comstock, C. Bentley, R. Christian, M. Carvajal ended up 1-2-1 but winning the final against the Big Shots.
The final medal tally was, 3 gold's, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes. All teams qualified for the 2009 National Championships to be held in Disney.
A special thanks to Tournament Director Scott Bejlovec and Brian Horn, without their involvement there would have been no tournament. Thanks to all the parents that assisted in making this an excellent and memorable inaugural tournament. PBFC received numerous kudos from teams and Challenge Sports for the quality of our tournament. |
